I didn’t like Uncategorized so I changed it to General. A catch-all category.

Ye Olde Pseudo Medievel Renaissance Faire

I’ve been in the SCA and I’ve been to medievel and renaissance faires. These are popular misconceptions of the the Renaissance and Middle Ages were in Europe based on Victorian fantasies. Some are more authentic than others. Church and society were very different. Most people would be peasants and Catholic or Protestant. The SCA is a pseudo medievel theme party with bits of authenticity thrown in. They are not re-enactors like the Civil War buffs.
I’m not crazy about the way at ren-faires the performers accost you. It’s annoying and I don’t want to be immersed in their world. Most of them are carnie types. And it is often said that a ren faire is the last refuge of an out of work actor.

How would I do a medievel or renaissance faire? I’d have a little more authenticity to it. Especially in the costumes and crafts. To be authentic would be to pick a particular location and a particular time. Since there are different eras that appeal to people I’d probably have to create a multi-historical theme park. One area would have Vikings, another a Scottish village, another an old English village. If I were to include pirates I’d have to go up to the 18th century. I’d probably do an Arthurian/Robin Hood middle ages section. Then I’d do an Elizabethan/Tudor era village. The pirates would be contemporary with the Scots era because that’ when they’d get to wear kilts in the Jacobite era. I could mix the Vikings in with the Irish.

It’s all about entertainment. Alas most don’t care. I think authentic history can be portrayed in an entertaining manner. People should know that overall we are better of than those who lived during the Black Death or the Thirty Years War or the Spanish Inquisistion. If the historians and re-enactors are passionate it will come through. It’s nice to have a window on the past and though it is a pleasant fiction at least we can see how differently people lived.

It’s OK if ren-faires are fantasies as long as people are told they are and do not even begin to portray things they way they really were.

Bithidh sinn a’ phosadh

Bithidh Melissa agus mi fhìn a’ phosadh an-diudh. An uair sin bithidh ceilidh mór againn.

I’m getting married today, for the second time. It’s Melissa’s second too. We’ve been together since the end of 2003. We are going to have a big ceilidh.

It will be a relatively small ceremony with a large reception. Since Melissa and I have everything we need, we’ve asked people just for the pleasure of the company and if they play or sing to bring their instruments and perform. Also, if they feel they must give something we’ve asked people to make a donation to TSHA in our names. THSA is Tulsa Speech and Hearing Access (its new name).

We have friends and relatives coming from as far as California, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. The largest contingent outside of Oklahoma are coming from Texas. I think Melissa is going to have more people.

There’s no point in saying much of anything about our exes. One they might read this, and two they each have their own lives now. All I will say is this her ex is named Patrick and mine is named Patti which I thought was interesting enough coincidence to mention.

Back to the future. I know I marked this post Gàidhlig and there isn’t much Gaelic in it, but wasn’t sure where else to categorize it. I do want to voice my opinion on marriage.

Only the two individuals involved can marry each other, the priest, the minister, the judge, or the ship’s captain don’t marry you. They officiate. It doesn’t matter if the state, the public, or your friends and family recognize it, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. So if two individuals choose to and marry each other then no power on earth can stop it. It doesn’t matter what religion they belong to, nor race, nor sex. So the law can recognize or not. There are certain legal benefits to being recognized, but that shouldn’t stop two people even if it isn’t.

So what I’m saying, it doesn’t matter what I think of gay marriages. It only matters that the gay couple marry each other. It’s the last taboo. Multi-racial and cross-religion marriages used to be prohibited either culturally or legally. But they happen now. What about polygamous, polyandrous, or polyamorous marriages? Some societies recognize polygamy. Are they actually marriages? If I can say gay marriages are OK, why not polyamorous? I’m still thinking on that one.

Uell, tha sin uile.

Next

What now? I’m not sure, but I wanted to make a second blog entry.

Since I don’t view this as a journal per se, I will rewrite, revise, and even expand on older entries should I feel the need to do so.

Yeah, whatever

First post. What can I say? Welcome to my blog, I guess. Why did I call it ENTP? I’ve always wanted my own website and I had to think of a name for it. I thought about calling it maverick, but thought that might come across as being too pretentious. ENTP is a personality type as described in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).You can read the Wikipedia entry for all the gory details.

I think I may do a personal podcast. They’ll not have a theme. It’ll just be what I’m interested in and interested in sharing. Subjects would include, Scots Gaelic, science fiction, science, politics, religion, evolution, history, movies & tv, astronomy, spaceflight (manned and unmanned), cooking, travel, other foreign languages (Russian, German, Japanese) & linguistics, computers, geekdom, and mavericks. I’m already doing a podcast for a science fiction convention, Conestoga.
Mavericks are people that I’m drawn to. They have had an impact on the world and impressed me with their accomplishments. I could probably rank them as to their importance to me. I would rank Richard Feynman above Isaac Asimov, but not by much. I’ll list others that have influenced me but I no longer place much faith in. People like Ayn Rand and G. Gordon Liddy. I do wonder how much of our personality is innate and how much is learned. I also wonder how much personality influences our politics and our religion. There are a multitude of factors, education, environment, society, friends, etc. that can influence a person. At what point do the influences stop and your own self shine through. The self that is created by you, that is original. And if it stands out in society you are considered a maverick.

What I like about a maverick is they look at the world a different way. The status quo says ‘it’s this way accept it’ and the maverick says ‘No. that doesn’t make sense. after examining it, this is how it is.’

Some are more maverick than others. And not necessarily in the order of ranking.

  • Richard Feyman
  • Joseph Campbell
  • R. Buckminster Fuller
  • Isaac Asimov
  • Freeman Dyson
  • Gerard K. O’Neill
  • John Gardner
  • Bruce Lee
  • Lon Chaney, Sr.
  • Carl Sagan
  • Julian May
  • Julian Jaynes
  • Douglas Hofstadter

I’ll expand on the list later. I’ll also include people that were a big influence at the time but not so much any more. These are people that have had an impact, whether I consider it positive or negative. I might include places that I consider to be maverick as well, like San Francisco, Geneva, Edinburgh.

There are some people that had a big influence on me at the time I was reading their work, but I no longer hold them as valid. They are mavericks. Ayn Rand comes to mind. I read quite a bit of her work. She is like Zeno’s paradox. You can prove through logic that motion is impossible but that’s not what we observe in the real world. Her ideas work in her writings, but it’s not what we observe in the real world.
